Morabito Collection
In April 2015, Phil Akashi has been invited in Bali to create an artwork for the Morabito Collection. It was an honor for the artist to be invited by the well-known artist-designer Pascal Morabito in the Morabito Art Villa and to create for such an ingenious family.
Pascal Morabito, who was friend with legends such as Arman, Andy Warhol, César, Dali, Keith Haring, and Vasarely, made his name with sculptural jewelry and perfumes for private and international clientele. His jewel the “Diamant captif”, confined in a cube of Plexiglas, set with gold, went round the world and enabled him to have a place in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The grand father of Pascal, Jean-Baptiste Morabito, founded in 1905 the French luxury brand Morabito specialized in handmade leather goods serving clients from Marilyn Monroe to Claude Pompidou. Ito Morabito aka Ora-ïto, the son of Pascal, is a famous French designer who has developed his own vocabulary named “Simplexity”. In 2011, Ora ïto was decorated “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” and he became today a real brand of design working for major brands. He has created recently exhibitions with renowned French artists Xavier Veilhan and Daniel Buren.
For this commissioned project, Phil Akashi has created an artwork representing a circle of purity called “ROLLABITO”. The artwork is composed of seals imprints with the Chinese characters 恩/"grace", 怡/"harmony" and 智/"wisdom". These characters exemplify symbols of the Morabito’s creations. The artwork of Phil Akashi hangs in the Morabito Collection between artworks of legends such as Arman, Damien Hirst, Keith Haring, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, César.
